A Helpful Dose of Herbs

A Helpful dose of herbs is always beneficial especially in your garden or pantry. One of my favorite springtime herbs is Lemon Verbena. Known scientifically as (Aloysia citrodoran) is native to South America shrub akin to the verbena family of plants.

Pictured above in the blue bowl is harvested dried loose leaf lemon verbena.

I think Lemon Verbena is a must have in your garden. It’s spear shape glossy leaves and cheerful lemon scent is inviting and encourages the avid gardener to have a smile on their face. It grows really well in the heat of the summer. The best time planting is during the same time as you set out your tomato plants.

Lemon verbena enjoys sun to part shade in warm climates and can grow up to 6 ft tall if not pruned. At first Lemon verbena can be a bit wiry like a vine but it will soon find its way if planted properly to show off its beautiful green leaves. In colder regions you can plant it in a container just make sure to bring it in during winter months. In zone 8 it may tolerate the winter conditions outside.

Besides, it’s beautiful pick me up scent it is a great addition as an herb. Any plant that has a citrusy scent is known to get the serotonin levels up so it’s awesome to dispel the blues.

Word of caution, Lemon Verbena is great consumption for humans, but it considered very toxics, to cats, dogs, and horses.

Lemon Verbena has been used for digestive disorders including indigestion, gas, colic, diarrhea, and constipation, agitation, joint pain, insomnia, asthma, colds, fever, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, skin conditions, stress, nervousness and chills.

You see lemon verbena is just not another pretty slender leaf girl in the garden she’s really smart and knows it.

So, add this little lemony hot mama to your garden girls you’ll be glad you did because she is total TKO with her sucker punch so don’t be sour about it.
